Featured Boat: SS Santa Maria
Four “M” class cargo-liners were built in 1963/64 for South American
services, replacing three of the 1946 sisters. They were fitted with
travelling gantry cranes fore and aft for rapid unloading, and their
large passenger capacity of 117 gave them priority access through the
Panama Canal and to ports. They ceased carrying passengers soon after
the Prudential Line acquired a controlling interest in Grace Line in
1970. However, a new passenger-cargo service from US West Coast ports
around South America was started in 1972. In 1978, the service and ships
were acquired by Delta Line, who continued the service until about 1983
 when they were scrapped.
